Research ReportsBeyond breathlessness: The lived experience of pulmonary hypertension symptoms30 pages

Our report, published in November 2025, shares what people with PH and their caregivers told us about the symptoms that affect them most, from breathlessness to fatigue, and how those symptoms shape everyday life.

What’s inside Beyond breathlessness: The lived experience of pulmonary hypertension symptoms

In March 2025, PHA UK invited people living with PH and caregivers in the UK to complete separate surveys. We received 232 responses from people with PH and 35 from caregivers. The report sets out which symptoms were most common and most impactful over the past year, with breathlessness, fatigue and tiredness standing out, alongside palpitations, cough, dizziness and swelling. Respondents also named weather, stress and sleep as the biggest influences on how symptoms change. A follow-on questionnaire with 39 responses asked people how they tell tiredness and fatigue apart, and included the Fatigue Severity Scale. Personal comments, short stories from Paula, Nora, Jayne and Emily, and a poem by PHA UK Chair Dr Iain Armstrong sit alongside the findings. The report concludes that fatigue is often overlooked and argues for patient-reported measures in care. It will interest the PH community, families and healthcare professionals.

Research ReportsApps and PH: Thoughts from the PH community8 pages

This report shares what the PH community told PHA UK in an online survey in summer 2024 about using apps, and whether a dedicated pulmonary hypertension app for support, resources and research would be welcome.

What’s inside Apps and PH: Thoughts from the PH community

Researchers from the UK's specialist PH centres wanted to know if a custom-designed app might help people with PH find support and resources and take part in studies. To help, PHA UK ran an online survey in August 2024, with 114 people taking part. Most were aged 51 to 70 and many had been diagnosed for more than three years. The report covers which devices people use, how often they use apps and whether they sometimes need help with technology. Most respondents said they'd be likely to use a PH app, and many said data security and privacy matter a great deal to them. Symptom tracking was ranked the most useful feature, followed by medication reminders. The report also includes people's own comments, both supportive and doubtful. It ends by explaining that the findings helped secure funding to develop the app, with autumn 2026 recorded as the hoped-for launch date.

Research ReportsUnderstanding attitudes towards the use of AI in reading CT scans10 pages

This PHA UK survey report shares how people with PH and those who care for them feel about artificial intelligence (AI) being used to read CT scans, gathered to support research at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and the University of Sheffield.

What’s inside Understanding attitudes towards the use of AI in reading CT scans

Researchers from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and the University of Sheffield wanted to understand how the PH community feels about AI helping to read CT scans. PHA UK invited the community to take part, and 105 people completed the survey. Most respondents have PH themselves, and the rest know or care for someone with PH. The report covers how familiar people are with AI in healthcare, how comfortable they'd feel with AI reading their scans, and their main concerns, such as errors in diagnosis, lack of doctor oversight and data privacy. Most were comfortable with AI if a radiologist or PH doctor checked the results, while few would trust AI alone. Many were also open to AI spotting other conditions, such as weak bones or muscles, alongside PH. The report includes respondents' comments in their own words and will interest anyone curious about AI in PH care.

Research ReportsUnderstanding attitudes towards the clinical frailty scale and its potential use in PH14 pages

This PHA UK report shares what people with PH and caregivers told us in an April 2024 online survey about the clinical frailty scale, and whether it could help describe how PH affects someone's daily life.

What’s inside Understanding attitudes towards the clinical frailty scale and its potential use in PH

The clinical frailty scale scores a person's activity and everyday abilities, such as mobility, balance, dressing and cooking. It's already used in other conditions, including COPD. PHA UK ran this survey in April 2024 through its Research Forum and Facebook to see whether the scale could give people with PH another way to describe their experience. There were 54 responses, 50 of them from people with PH. The report sets out the figures alongside people's own comments. Over half of the people with PH who responded said the score would help describe how PH affects them, and no one wanted it completed by healthcare professionals alone. Some found the word frailty uncomfortable, linked it with older age or suggested another name. Others raised the emotional impact, or felt it should sit alongside emPHasis-10 rather than replace it. It will interest people with PH, caregivers and professionals.

Research ReportsBreathless, not voiceless: What it means to live with PH today48 pages

Breathless, not voiceless shares the results of PHA UK's 2023 Living with PH survey. It brings together the experiences of 859 adults with PH in the UK on diagnosis, daily life and specialist care.

What’s inside Breathless, not voiceless: What it means to live with PH today

This report shares findings from PHA UK's fourth major Living with PH survey, which ran from December 2022 to June 2023. It was open to adults with PH across the UK, online and on paper, and 859 people took part. The quotes and videos in the report were gathered separately during 2022 and 2023. The report looks at diagnosis, everyday life, and treatment and specialist care. For around half of people, diagnosis took over a year after they first noticed symptoms. Waits and referral delays were longer than in PHA UK's earlier survey. People described PH affecting their quality of life, mental and emotional wellbeing, work, relationships and finances. Satisfaction with specialist PH care was high, although many people found travelling to appointments difficult. PHA UK says the findings will shape its priorities and campaigning. The report will interest people living with PH, their families and anyone working to improve PH services.

Research ReportsYour data, your thoughts7 pages

In June 2023, PHA UK asked people with PH, and those who love or care for them, how they would feel about researchers accessing health records without written consent. This report shares what they told us.

What’s inside Your data, your thoughts

This report sets out feedback gathered in June 2023 through two surveys. One was for people with PH; the separate survey for family, friends and carers received 38 responses. It looks at three reasons researchers might need present and historical health data: finding ways to diagnose PH earlier, understanding how well drug treatments work over time, and mapping the order of treatments against disease progression to find the most effective treatment pathways. Among people with PH, between 75% and 80% said they'd be happy for their records to be accessed without written consent for these purposes, rising to 89% or 90% after their death. The report shares a range of comments, from strong support for research to worries about privacy, commercial use and wanting to be asked first. It notes that studies using patient data need ethics committee approval, and that the findings will help inform future ethical approval applications in PH research.

This PHA UK survey report looks at how the cost-of-living crisis was affecting people with pulmonary hypertension in autumn 2022, from heating and oxygen use to food, travel to appointments and worries about health.

What’s inside The cost of living crisis and your health

In October and November 2022, PHA UK ran an online survey to understand how rising costs were affecting people living with PH, and 112 people responded. The survey closed on 4 November 2022, before the Government's Autumn Statement. The report sets out what people told us about heating, oxygen, rent and mortgage payments, food, travel to medical appointments and prescription costs. Alongside the figures, it shares respondents' own words. Findings include that 60% of people using less heating felt the cold was making their PH symptoms worse, and that a third of people who take oxygen had reduced how much they use because of electricity costs. Many also described stress, anxiety and fears for the future. These are people's reported experiences, not clinical findings.
